RUBBER TREES AND LAOS
As far as the eye can see and beyond, neatly planted row after row of rubber trees permeate rural landscapes replacing rice fields. A Lao-Vietnam Joint Venture, 5-years later these once scrawny seedlings are producing latex. While an environmentally divisive subject, the Project has provided thousands of rural villagers with employment who would not otherwise be employed.
While Government to Government aid supported rice continues to flow into the Country, Laos could supply their Country’s demand. An additional controversy looms over land usage. Rice is a Laotian daily staple.
