After receiving the village Chief’s permission, many announcements are posted throughout the village 4 days prior to the party, making sure parents are informed of the children’s event.  Individual village parties are held from May 20 to June 15 with 80 to 210 children attending each party.  Party supplies are provided and brought to the village by INDIGO THREADS.  INDIGO THREADS Director and a staff person conduct the entertaining fun parties.

Four years ago, INDIGO THREADS initiated our Annual Children’s Day Parties, HONORING THE DIGNITY OF VILLAGE CHILDREN.  Without time for play and fun, children’s lives are so difficult in poor rural villages.  It is often the children’s duty to carry buckets and more buckets of water from far away rivers for the family water source.  Forage for wild food in the forest to either sell at the market or for family consumption. Launder the family’s clothing at the community well with a small brush.  Take care of their younger siblings while parents tend the rice fields.   Village children are often seen on the streets of Pakse City selling handmade brooms or at the market selling wild mushrooms and peanuts from their crop.  One day a year, INDIGO THREADS brings a ‘little bit of fun’ to these deserving children who have so little.  For 2 hours a year, these children can be children.  And they are!  More than 600 children participated in this year’s Children’s Days events.

The Village Children’s Day Parties were the inspiration for INDIGO THREADS primary school Reading/Recreation Program.   Introducing students to information and the pleasure of  reading that books have to offer is the primary focus.  Programs are similar but expanded.  The school Reading/Recreation Program is smaller in size giving students the individual attention they need.  In addition to this Program, we address personal hygiene, health care, environment issues and exercise.  We are anticipating 11 primary schools participation in the pilot Program.  Please, refer to the Reading/Recreation 'blog' for more information about this Program.

Scenes from nature are the children's favorite subject to draw.

Your donations are welcome to help support INDIGO THREADS Primary School Reading/Recreation Program.  Pay Pal is available on this site to receive your contributions.  On the top tool bar of the Home Page, chick DONATION.  For more information contact Mary D. Meyer mdmeyer@indigothreads.org
