POSITION:  Assist Coordinator-INDIGO THREADS Reading/Recreation Program (Roving 'Active Leaning' Program) Rural Primary Schools in Pathoumphone District.
INDIGO THREADS, Lao Education Support and Village Development, is a small non-profit US humanitarian Organization dedicated to the development and support of education opportunities for poor, rural children in Southern Laos villages.

PRIMARY FOCUS OF PROGRAM: Introduce students to the importance of books and reading, to gain knowledge, for enjoyment and to expand imagination.  Reading is a basic education tool.

THIS PROGRAM is a pilot program developed by INDIGO THREADS from our Village Children’s Day Parties over the past 4 years.  In 2007, a separate colorfully decorated reading room was created at Louyta Primary School filled with books, games, drawing materials, puzzles and flash cards. The students were overwhelmed with their newfound treasures, BOOKS with stories they wanted to read, pictures they wanted to see. INDIGO THREADS Director, after seeing the student’s enthusiasm, developed a weekly Program staffed by INDIGO THREADS in cooperation with Pathoumphone District Education and the teachers.

THE PROGRAM’S FORMAT is as follows: Students are read to, act out stories with props and have allocated time to read or imagine a story. Students learn one English word for one Lao word. The importance of education is repeated each session. Students interact with a variety of simple, creative craft and drawing projects. Social, environment and hygiene issues are addressed. Group exercise is part of every class. The other 10 participating schools do not have a separate reading room; therefore, the word ‘roving’ is used. We must bring books and supplies to each school each session and return daily to the office for the next day’s use. The classes are 50-60 students each session giving the students the individual attention needed. The 11 primary schools are located between Km. 16 and Km. 37 in Pathoumphone District. The on time classes are from 2:00 to 3:30 making sure the travel time is taken into accurate consideration. At this time, this is not a book-lending Program.

Although this is a part-time position, INDIGO THREADS Director is seeking an ASSISTANT to work side by side with her.  The right candidate could be considered for both positions.  The Program will begin in mid December with modest Laotian wage considerations depending on the candidate’s abilities.
