CHILDREN’S LAO LANGUAGE BOOKS

Indigo Threads is grateful to the Lao Room to Read Organization and Ms. Somphet, their dynamic Director, for the generous donation of Lao language children’s books for our Primary School Reading/Recreation Program.  Room to Read has had a major influence on the importance of reading and books as part of the Laotian students education.  Until recently, there were few books available for children.  The Lao National Library continues to develop and publish new books.  Their comfortable well-stocked libraries in larger cities are staffed with dedicated people supporting reading and education.

SEARCH FOR A R/R PROGRAM ASSISTANT UPDATE

Despite our intense search for a Primary School Reading/Recreation Room Program Assistant, we have NOT been successful in finding a qualified candidate.  The results from our month long ad in the local Champa Mai newspaper provided applicants that wanted to learn English with a foreigner.   For this position/s, the requirements are to have excellent English skills, speaking, some writing and translating.  Our search will broaden by placing an ad in Vientiane and consider working in cooperation with the Room to Read Organization and the Lao National Library.

 SCHOOL CONSTRUCTION

With the support of an extremely generous caring person, Indigo Threads will be able to fulfill their 2009 commitment to complete the second building at Ban Lieng Second School, Pathoumphone District, Champasak Province.  Five years ago, this 7-classroom building was constructed by another Organization but left with major work to be completed.  Indigo Threads built and donated a new 3-classroom building on the same campus in September 2008.  Indigo Threads new building is to the left on this building.

ON THE LIGHTER SIDE

On our School Lunch Program delivery route, we drive by this typical rural Laotian market on Km. 24-south.  I have mentioned before, Laotians eat everything, nothing goes to waste.  This was a shock to me and difficult to believe.  Everyday there are 1-3 heads and gone when we make our return.  Take a look the next time you pass by.
