IT SUPPORTS DISTRICT ED DEPT. ENGLISH COURSE

March 15, 2009

Time and again, Indigo Threads has been asked to support English lessons for the District Education Department staff.  Time and again, the answer had been no, “not until the staffs’ busy schedule would allow them to set aside an adequate amount of time to attend and participate in English classes”.

English language skills being more important than every, 21 Department staff persons committed to an abbreviated 5 day, 15 hour course.  The simplified 3-hour classes were well attended with enthusiastic participating students.  Lanna, who works with Indigo Threads School Lunch Program and has an ESL teaching certificate from Thailand, instructed the classes while Indigo Threads Director assisted with individual support.  Although an abbreviated short course, Indigo Threads is anticipating the Department’s staff will continue to learn and practice their new English skills with the simply LEARNING ENGLISH BY YOURSELF book donated to each student.

The National Education Bureau is working toward adding English to the primary school curriculum beginning in level 3, rather than the current upper secondary school curriculum.  Special educated English teachers will teach not the student’s classroom teachers.  Despite this questionable plan, Indigo Threads is encouraging all educators to have some knowledge of English.

One scholarship to the Pakse Teacher’s Training College Special Weekend English Course has been awarded to Indigo Threads District Foreign Investment Coordinator.  It is a huge commitment for an individual with a heavy work schedule, a family and weekend classes who travels from his rural village to the city both weekend days.  Fortunately, he is able to practice his English with Indigo Threads Director.

As seen in the photos, Indigo Threads donated the large ‘white board’ to the District Education Department office.
